Corra Consulting - Shingy, Target's Great Quarter & The Future of Mobile Pay

Shingy, Target's Great Quarter & The Future of Mobile Pay

The Thread's Top Three:

1.  In defense of Shingy: ‘He’s like a hired artist.’  David Shing. His critics argue he is overpaid. His critics question why someone would get six figures to fly all around the world and attend conferences. They mock him for everything from his hair to coining terms such as “pizzled” and “fail forward foundation.” Pizzled apparently is part pissed and part puzzled but can’t say that I have a clue what he means with “fail forward.” Whether he’s legit or not is clearly up for debate. However, the idea that a company like AOL is clear-minded enough to know that to advance, they need to think outside the box--well, to me, that’s hopeful.

2.  Nice quarter, Target.  But there’s more to do.  As predicted, Target’s promotional activity kept their gross margin under 30%--29.5% to be exact. I did say it would be close. That said, there was overall good news to report. Target did see gains because they focused on merchandising and not simply pricing. Other retailers that are not seeing increases should take note. They have put a focus on core businesses and regional purchasing to cater to customer preferences. And, yes, there’s more to do, but Target should get credit for all they have actually done in three short quarters and post-data breach.

3.  Mobile Payments to Tally Just 1% o All U.S. Consumer Spending in 2019.  I think Forrester is dead-on with their forecast. Maybe I’m biased though. My parents still pay bills in-person and with cash--not all of their bills, but the fact that they do it at all still impacts these kinds of stats. Mobile payments will grow but in their due time.
